About Shed
Newmarket-on-Fergus Men’s Shed is located in Carrigoran, Co. Clare. The shed was founded and set up by PJ McMahon the current chair, secretary Mike Flynn and treasurer Jimmy Cullinane in May 2017. “After a bit of time and the generosity of locals, we were able to set up the shed and fund it successfully” says PJ.
“The shed currently has 10 members; most are retired but are all very active. The members come from all different occupational backgrounds, from carpenters, office workers and even an upholsterer. We all enjoy working together and having a chat about recent sporting events and things happening in the area”
Members of Newmarket-on-Fergus Men’s Shed are heavily involved in the community and always help out if needed in the locality. Their main activity is woodworking, building bird boxes, nesting boxes and several other items that they sell to locals. They also repair furniture and any odd bits that comes to their door. Helping out in the Tidy Towns is another activity undertaken by members.
“A trip to Croke Park is in the pipeline and we also hope to visit Cork in the next few months. It’s great to get out for a day and we always have a great time” laughs PJ. “I feel with the constant activity in the shed and these trips, they help boost the Mental Health status of our members, as it gives them activities to look forward to. We also host cluster meetings. We only have 10 members so far but I urge any man in the area to come down and give it a go – even if it’s only for an hour. I’d love to see the group double or even triple, the more the merrier”
The shed is open Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am – 2.30 pm. Everyone who attends donates €2. This helps contribute to electricity, tea, biscuits and other costs. New members are welcome and further information can be obtained by contacting either contact listed for the Shed
