About Shed
December 2017
Limerick has a storied literary tradition and the latest publication to come out of the county’s vibrant Men’s Shed movement is sure to be a real page turner. As part of a fundraising drive the gentlemen of Croom Men’s Shed launched their 2018 calendar. This unique project was facilitated by Laura Bennett of the village’s Family Resource Centre, which has enjoyed exceptionally close links with Croom Men’s Shed since it’s inception in 2013. “Members of our Men’s Shed come from all walks of life,” says Laura, “The bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and they would like something meaningful to do with that time.”
The sheer diversity of Men’s Sheds’ activities never ceases to surprise and intrigue, and the men of Croom keep as busy as any. “Croom Men’s Shed participate in a very broad range of activities,” says Laura, “from cooking to woodwork to gardening and have recently planted a small orchard which will hopefully bear fruit next year.”
The orchard is not the only thing that requires careful tending. No Men’s Shed can afford to stand still and keeping the show on the road takes up a significant portion of the Croom Men’s Shed time but with the right attitude even the workaday job of fundraising can prove an exciting challenge. “As the shed is a not – for – profit project, fundraising is essential to it’s survival,” says Laura. “We hold table quizzes, barbecues and various other events throughout the year. Making this calendar was great fun and there were a lot of laughs along the way.”
