    It’s always good to see sheds feature in the local and national media, spreading the positive message of the Men’s Sheds movement far and wide.

    Carrigaline Men’s Shed recently had some distinguished visitors, as Housing Minister Simon Coveney and Cork County Mayor Seamus McGrath helped turn the sod on Phase 1 of their new premises in Waterpark.

    Minister Coveney told West Cork’s Southern Star newspaper that;

    ‘This facility allows men to meet, to socialise, to use their experience and skillsets in a very practical way. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to bring people together in a way that supports community interaction and development. This will be a pilot benchmark for the quality of services that other Men’s Sheds throughout the county can potentially provide’.

    Phase 1 of the project was jointly funded through the efforts of Carrigaline Men’s Shed itself, which raised a remarkable €15,000 through local fundraising, and a matching contribution of €15,000 from Cork County Council. The new facility will be completed in phases over the course of the next year.

    Meanwhile, Balbriggan Men’s Shed also featured in the local media recently, as the Fingal Independent published a lengthy and highly positive piece by John Manning on the visit to the shed of counsellor and psychiatrist Paula Hughes.

    In the article, entitled Sharing at ‘The Shed’, Paula Hughes remarked that;

    ‘People often don’t understand the resources they have available to do that and the Men’s Shed is a fabulous resource for that. People get to engage with other people here and foster relationships. You talk about mindfulness and here, people get to make stuff, use their hands in a creative process and that is mindfulness in action’.

    The piece, which also contains quotes from founder members Sean Corrigan and Con Lawlor, concludes that;

    …the brotherhood [was] evident in the room from the good-natured ribbing the members gave each other to the open-hearted sharing of their own mental health issues was summed up by another member who said: ‘It’s like I’ve known these guys all my life.’
