About Shed
Headford Men’s Shed is one of the longest established sheds in Ireland. It is the fourth shed to have been set up and first shed to be established in the West in 2011. Today it is a vibrant shed with approximately 25 active members.
Many projects are undertaken in our workshop; these include making bee hives, wooden benches, picnic tables, planters, flax processing equipment, stands for the local Lace Project, a bar counter and stage for the annual Headfest Festival. We recently completed a large scale project in conjunction with Architecture Ireland and the local secondary school, Presentation Collect Headford.
There is a large poly tunnel and garden on site where fruit, vegetables and flowers are grown for our members and others in the community. We embrace Biodiversity in all our planting, and grow many pollinator friendly plants. Recently two member of the shed were involved in the project to remove Rhododendron in the Killarney National Park.
Music and singing are an integral part of our shed. We have a number of fine musicians in our ranks and almost half the members of the shed are in the local choir,The Corrib Singers. We regularly hold musical mornings and in the past we have been joined by prominent local musicians, and members of other sheds.
Following the very successful ‘Shed’s for Life’ programme the shed has continued to provide yoga and fitness classes for members. Craft classes have been undertaken in the past and we hope to offer more in the future. Our day trips have proved very popular.
The Shed has a cross community collaborative approach. We have hosted a Flax Festival on two occasions in conjunction with Headford Community Garden, Headford Tidy Towns and Headford Lace Project. Flax that was grown locally was processed into thread.
The event also featured flax themed music, poetry, spinning, singing and dancing.
