  • COOLEY men have shown their panache for the kitchen with the launch of a new cookery book written and designed by those involved in the Cooley Peninsula Men’s Shed project.

Tommy Cowan who have been involved in the project for the last few months. The book is edited by former Bush Post Primary School principal Kevin Conroy and also features beautiful pictures of the Cooley Peninsula.

One of those behind the cookbook, Owen Mulligan, said the Cooley Peninsula Men’s Shed has been running for about 18 months and it has been growing in popularity since then.

It is founded on the principle that every man brings his own skill to the group and, that way, everyone can learn from each other in a wide and varied range of fields such as woodwork, carving, art and painting. There are around 60 men involved in the Cooley Peninsula Men’s Shed, 40 on a full-time basis.

When chefs Adrian and Tommy arrived, the men decided to run cookery classes at the facility in Riverstown, which boasts a kitchen and taught their colleagues how to prepare simple, tasty and healthy meals on a budget for singles, couples and families.

The classes were a big success and the idea for the cookery book was germinated from there. The publication was supported and assisted by Louth Men’s Sheds co-ordinator Eva Beirne.

Selecting the recipes and adding the photography, which showcases the beauty of the peninsula, has culminated in a wonderful production that was, as Mr. Mulligan said, ‘a real team effort’.

The book features simple and inexpensive recipes for families and those living on their own. The book is on sale at a number of shops in the peninsula and is priced at €15.
