About Shed
Talks got under way in the summer of 2017 in the hope of establishing Glin Men’s Shed in Co. Limerick in order to help men lead happier, healthier and more productive lives. “We had preliminary meetings in May and June, then we started up in July. There was an old Church of Ireland premises, which the local development company had a lease on and it wasn’t being used – so we got it from them. There was no rent, which was great, although we had to do quite a bit of work in terms of the surroundings and electrics,” says Joe
“We built a membership of 22 people, which is quite good in such a short space of time. We open 2 nights a week, Mondays and Thursdays from 7 pm – 10 pm and we are expanding that to three nights a week next month.”
The shedders would be an equal split in terms of being unemployed or retired and they have been busy generating funding to support the shed. “We recently got woodworking equipment and we took out insurance to cover it – but that is a big expense. We had to do some fundraising, so we ran pub evenings, raffles and we had a church collection.” While there may be an array of activities on offer at Glin Men’s Shed, the best part of the evening is indulging in one another’s company. We have a dart board and a card table, but the highlight of the evening is when we sit down to have tea, biscuits and a chat.” Glin Men’s Shed are very involved with their community, helping in any which way they can. They have helped out with the community events parking cars and they also tend to get involved with Tidy Towns as well.
Men’s health and social issues are a very important aspect to the shed. New members are always welcome to join and if you require more information please see the contact details listed or you can also check out Glin Men’s Shed Facebook page
